Tea tree oil is steam-distilled from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a tree native to Australia and used by Aboriginal communities for generations. Its power comes from a natural compound called terpinen-4-ol — which makes up roughly 30–40% of the oil and does most of the heavy lifting.
Peer-reviewed research shows terpinen-4-ol gives tea tree oil broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity — antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory — largely by disrupting the cell membranes of the microbes behind odor, athlete's foot and skin troubles.
